There are various different types of eaves and verges that protect the edges of roofs where they meet the house walls. This is where guttering is attached to drain water that falls on the roof.
Flat roofs are usually covered in bituminous-based asphalt or roofing felt, and tend to have a shorter life than pitched roofs. If you have a problem with your flat roof it's best to get a professional to look at it - although you can buy a special sealant for making your own repairs to splits or blisters in the roofing felt
There are key differences between constructing a flat roof compared to a pitched roof and it’s important to understand the basic criteria.
The starting point involves laying roofing joists across the two upright items, which in most cases will be the walls of the structure. Using the steel joists will provide more stability and these are usually found in one, if not both, of the walls.
The distance between the joists is usually around 400mm, although this will depend on the size of the roof and type of material that will be applied. This is to reduce the amount of pressure placed on top.

UPVC gutters come in one continuous unit as they are made from mounded plastic. They have no seams and need no paint, hence a lesser chance of corrosion with time. ... The fascia board is the one mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house and is often called the ROOF LINE. However most people refer to it by the name of the main board that carries the gutter – the fascia or fascia's.
Fascia
The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses and usually does all the work of supporting the lower edge of the bottom row of tiles. The fascia board also carries all the guttering.
Soffit
The soffit board is tucked away under the fascia board. It is usually the board that you see most of from street level. The soffit can be ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area. Alternatively, ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Many people prefer the latter solution these days. Without adequate ventilation, condensation will form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.
Boxend
The Box End is a work of art, accommodating as it does the many different angles, planes and heights of the fascia, soffit and barge board at each corner of the house where there is a gable end.
